The Dassault Mirage 2000 is a French multirole, single-engine, fourth-generation jet fighter manufactured by Dassault Aviation. It was designed in the late 1970s as a lightweight fighter to replace the Mirage III for the French Air Force (Armée de l'air). The Mirage 2000 evolved into a multirole aircraft with several variants developed, with sales to a number of nations. It was later developed into the Mirage 2000N and 2000D strike variants, the improved Mirage 2000-5, and several export variants.

The Dassault Mirage 2000 is a Delta Wing, Multirole Fighter was developed due to previous failures of their aircraft development projects. The first being the Anglo-French Variable Geometry Swing-Wing Aircraft Project with Britain, which the French have to withdrew due to problems of the cost which led to Britain's collaboration with West Germany that resulted in the Panavia Tornado. The second being their own failure at developing their own variable-geometry aircraft being the Mirage G project due to the production cost being double of the Mirage G's predecessor, the Mirage F1 and over-engineered, and later to lose on interest after the more capable General Dynamics F-16 became popular in the market.

The Dassault Mirage 2000 started out as a secondary project named "Delta 1000" and later offered as "Delta 2000". Unlike the Mirage G which was a Strike Aircraft first and an Interceptor second, the Mirage 2000 was the opposite. The aircraft being a single engine, lighter and with simpler and traditional Delta Wing design from their predecessor being the Mirage III was deemed to be more affordable. After the Mirage G's failure, it was later offered to the French Air Force. After meeting the French Air Force's parameters and requirements alongside weapon system testing, the aircraft was ordered by the French Air Forces as an Interceptor first with secondary ground-attack capability, designated as Mirage 2000C (C for chasseur, it means "fighter").

The Dassault Mirage 2000 birthed variants of it later on. The Mirage 2000N was a Dedicated Nuclear Strike variant capable of carrying a Nuclear Cruise Missile at supersonic speed. Then, developed after it is a dedicated conventional ground attack variant, being the Mirage 2000D. The main Fighter variant being the Mirage 2000C later became rather obsolete quickly due to the advancement of the General Dynamics F-16's technological progression in their variants which led to the modernized version of it being the Mirage 2000-5, having better avionics and weapons system which was a stopgap for its successor being the Dassault Rafale.

To this day, there are nations that are still using the Dassault Mirage 2000 in service of their respective Air Forces due to their reliability. The Dassault Aviation's choice of going back to their root of Delta Wing design while also improving its aspect has proven to be worth doing in the long run, and even going as far as profiting them much more than their previous failures.
